Conversations Between Ten British Post-War Painters

Haunch of Venison London presents an exhibition of ten of Britain’s most important post-war painters, revealing the story behind their art.

'The Mystery of Appearance' is a fresh appraisal of ten artists - Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Patrick Caulfield, William Coldstream, Lucian Freud, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Leon Kossoff and Euan Uglow - with a display of over forty paintings and drawings including works that haven’t been on public display for decades.

In the mid-twentieth century this group of artists revived portrait and landscape painting at a time when abstract painting dominated. Their continued influence on a younger generation of artists is demonstrated by the powerful hold figurative art has today.

The exhibition examines the influence of the personal relationships between these artists, some of which began in the late forties at the Slade where Coldstream, Freud and Hamilton taught and Andrews and Uglow studied; and then again at the Royal College of Art, where Auerbach, Caulfield, Hockney and Kossoff were students. Supported by a catalogue essay in which the curator Catherine Lampert discusses their habits and methods and introduces previously unseen writing by the artists, the exhibition will look at the way their conversations impacted on the development of their work, demonstrating that despite their wide-ranging styles they are each linked by a desire to catch what Bacon describes as ‘the mystery of appearance within the mystery of making’, and in doing so broke new ground in contemporary painting

The exhibition includes major works by each artist, several borrowed from public collections, among them Francis Bacon’s Pope I.1951. from Aberdeen Art Gallery, David Hockney’s Man in a Museum, 1962. from the British Council and others like Frank Auerbach’s Primrose Hill, Winter Sunshine, 1962-64, and Euan Uglow’s Nude, Lady C, 1959-60. which have not been seen in public for many years.

'The Mystery of Appearance' is displayed across the four galleries in Haunch of Venison’s newly renovated space. The first gallery shows a selection of nudes by Auerbach, Coldstream, Freud, Hamilton and Uglow. They range from the heavily worked and abstracted to the finely calibrated and delicate and offer varied approaches to the observation and description of nudity.

The second gallery presents landscapes and portraits demonstrating how the group experimented with the materiality of paint. This is followed by a room that focuses on the special significance of the Old Masters to these artists, most of whom selected one of the ‘Artist’s Eye’ exhibitions at the National Gallery. This section of the display gathers works which have an initial reference to an Old Master painting or museum object. The final gallery is concerned with these artists’ interpretation of space and lens-based imagery – in architecture, in the natural environment and in the human body – transformed into a two-dimensional image.

'The Mystery of Appearance' features large and small scale paintings and drawings with a focus on the artists’ varied approach to paint and subject matter and the connections between their work. Given only three of these artists are still alive the exhibition is timely and poignant, setting out to re-evaluate a group of ten connected and hugely influential painters, exploring the motives, conversations and stories behind their art.

Dieter Rams is a German industrial designer who was chief of design for the influential electronic devices manufacturer Braun for almost 35 years. Rams and his team designed many iconic devices ranging from record players to furniture to storage systems.

Dieter Rams is associated with the memorable phrase “Less, but better”. He used graphic design, form, proportion, and materiality to create order within his designs. His work does not try to be the center of attention, rather he allows his work to become part of the environment through precision and order.

Here are his famous "Principles of Good Design":

1. Good design is innovative: Innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.
2. Good design makes a product useful: A product is bought to be used and has to satisfy certain functional, psychological and aesthetic criteria.
3 Good design is aesthetic: The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being.
4. Good design makes a product understandable: Design clarifies a product’s structure and at its best, is self-explanatory.
5. Good design is unobtrusive: Well-designed products are like neutral and restrained tools that are neither decorative objects nor works of art.
6. Good design is honest: Good design does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.
7. Good design is long-lasting: Good design avoids being fashionable so it lasts many years and never appears antiquated.
8. Good design is thorough, down to the last detail: In good design nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance and it should show respect towards the consumer.
9. Good design is environmentally-friendly: Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment, conserving resources and minimizing physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.
10. Good design is as little design as possible: Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials.

Dieter Ram's work has been a big influence on others such as Jonnathon Ive, Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple. Phaidon publishing released a new book on Dieter Rams in June, 2011 called Dieter Rams: As Little Design as Possible – with a foreword writen by Jonathan Ive.

There were a few skateboards that I bought multiple copies of: each to replace one I had previously broken. One of those decks is the Dogtown Eric Dressen model. While my first skateboard was a Vision Mark Gonzales (and I rode seven of them), the Dressen was my favorite. I rode 9 different Dressen models.

I started skating in 1984, while the industry was still fledgling and largely d.i.y. Doing tricks off of launch ramps was popular then, and ultimately resulted in most of the breakage that warranted a deck replacement. I should also admit that several decks were shattered during adolescent fits of rage. Paint pens, possibly a top 100 amongst greatest twentieth century inventions, personalized the decks with design and text.

Here is another example of American junk culture: skateboarding. When 24th century anthropologists look back at 20th century american culture, do they lump it all together into one largely consumer culture? Or, do they seperate us into sects, where consumer interests define our groups? There is no doubt that skateboarding and music defined much of my person, as well as who I dated and who I hung around with.

Consider this an introduction to one part of a series of works that encompasses the idea of junk culture: specifically American junk culture. While many artists currently embrace American folk culture in their work, they subsequently ignore the honest source of folk culture. This is not a matter of aesthetically picking out objects, but realizing the cultural entities that define regional groups of Americans; or that define a majority of Americans. Budweiser is an American iconic product.

It is not uncommon to walk into a country gas station or pool hall in South Carolina to buy some brews and find Bud as the only option. A good ol' boy drinks Budweiser- plain and simple. My first beer in 9th grade: Budweiser in a can. The first beer I ever puked: you got it, Budweiser. Want to hang out in a country/western bar and fit in despite your Vans shoes or hippie haircut: hold a Bud. Budweiser is no doubt the common choice for the common southern American.
The Budweiser can of beer is my personal reference to Jasper Johns and American Pop Art. In a sense, Pop Art is/was often an early reference to American folk culture. In 1960, we just hadn't experienced the media and consumer environment long enough to determine how it fit into the larger context of American culture. Johns, in particular, is important to me because of his connection to South Carolina and the University of South Carolina where I earned my BFA in Studio Art. My interest in Johns and his work is what brought me here. What's also interesting with Johns' Painted Bronze, is that no literature considers the possibility that Ballantine may be a reference to his place of birth. Maybe it is, maybe it is not. The fact remains, Johns never revealed any meaning in the work and Ballantine is a town near where Johns grew up.

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrators James Braithwaite and Alex Kurina have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short and won the 2009 Emmy for 'New Approaches' (making it the first film to win an Emmy on behalf of the internet).

Chappaqua, an independent film directed by Conrad Rooker. It was originally released in 1966. The film featured Jean-Louis Barrault, Conrad Rooker, William S. Burroughs, Alan Ginsberg, Ravi Shankar, Swami Satchidananda, Moondog, and Ornette Coleman. While most credit the Beatles' George Harrison for introducing Ravi Shankar to the west, this film actually predates their recordings while also bringing the first Swami onto American soil. Chappaqua provided an early look at what would ultimately become a foresight to a "trippy" generation. This film was completely funded by Rooker with no outside investors.

It's here that I really began widening my musical taste. Somehow, I got from The Clash to Big Black! to Nurse with Wound all when I was a teen. In his first public performance since disaster put him in a wheelchair, Robert Wyatt sings the Monkees' I'm a Believer. On June 1, 1973, an inebriated Wyatt fell from Lady June's Maida Vale home fourth story window during a party. He had produced one album with his Matching Mole project, which he ultimately abandoned after being paralyzed from the waist down. This prompted Wyatt to embark on a solo vocal career and he essentially gave up drumming (although he made performances in more of a jazz style, using no kick drum). Soon after, Wyatt released an amazing album Rock Bottom with Mike Oldfield, Ivor Cutler, and Fred Frith. I'm a Believer was released the same year and made it to 29 in the UK charts. Both Rock Bottom and I'm a Believer were produced by Pink Floyd's Nick Mason.

A real cool dude in Kevin Taylor uploaded a short film onto Myspace that documents the infamous pool on George St. The pool was known across the state and kids like me put thousands of miles on their car to travel cross-state to skate it. Comprised mostly of stills, the film shows rare images of the supreme sessions enjoyed at the pool. @5:45- Video from a news story about the problems and destruction these hoodlum skaters are causing to public property. @8:57- a little snippet from the aforementioned Shepard Fairey. Ironically, the father of one of my best buds and a fellow Holy City skater was a city developer involved with filling the pool in. Kind'a sounds like an episode of the Brady Bunch, eh? I wonder if the kids will be able to save the pool! NOT

Andre the Giant has no posse like John Carpenter's posse. But being the teen in Charleston, SC that I was, I got to see lots of those stickers that have become OBEY. That is the land where Shepard Fairey grew up, along with a few more of us hoodlum skaters. I remember peeps taking these stickers everywhere they went. We were amazed when we saw them in random towns and cities. It's pretty cool to see the beginning of something like this. And to wonder if something remotely similar could ever happen to me... Another great David Axelrod production. This one is posted for its illustrative value as much as musical. There should be no question why hip-hop peeps pillage this guy. This album is produced while Prestige is still the shit for jazz production. Soon after this album (around 1975), studio technology ruined the industry as it did with rock and other genres. Engineers took over studio production and their equipment overran creative influence. The complexity of an album's production became more important than just writing a good song. Look back at bands that produced records from the late 60's and throughout the 70's. If they survived past 1975, their albums became quite different and far less accessible. (See Soft Machine, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Roxy Music, etc.)

I wonder if our field is falling to a similar fate. It seems to be more important to have created ceramic art with 3D printers, casting technology, laser cutters, etc. than to have created something profound, good or unique. The ceramic world has fallen into the trap of technology and research. Like the recording engineers of the 70's, ceramics is moving further and further into the private studio and away from public interest. Needless to say, punk rock and metal responded to the musical trends of the 70's. What will happen to us?

College pals while we were at the University of South Carolina, Assfactor 4 is still one on my favorite punk bands. These were the days. This show is filmed at Senseless Beauty in 5 Points, Columbia, SC around 1995. Senseless Beauty was ultimately closed when its owner was arrested for distribution of LSD and pimping underage male prostitutes. Despite it's egregious owner, countless amazing shows played at this short-lived venue.

Kratzspuren und Körnigkeit des für das Video verwendeten Super 8-Materials werden darin ebenso exponiert und hervorgehoben, wie die plastische »Dehnbarkeit« und »Verflüssigung« alter Aufnahmen mittels Computerbearbeitung. Die Filmsequenzen (etwa von zwei älteren Frauen in der Küche bzw. kalifornischen Meerlandschaften) erscheinen wie durch kaum merkliche Filter überlagert, worin nicht zuletzt die Instabilität von visueller Erinnerungsarbeit ihren Ausdruck findet. Die Bilder sind zudem entlang der Musik rhythmisiert und werden in winzigen, ruckartigen Bewegungen vor und zurück »gescratcht«. Und immer wieder leicht kitschig wirkende Strandszenen bzw. sentimentale Varieté-Aufnahmen, deren Oberfläche in digitale Wallungen, ein computerisiertes Flirren, versetzt wird. Entscheidend ist auch die Sichtbarmachung der Bildrahmung und der Kadrierung des Ausgangsmaterials, die das Stück hindurch zunehmend in den Vordergrund gerückt wird.
Die Manipulierbarkeit und Fragilität der verwendeten Filme bilden damit zentrale Aspekte, die »Aus« – perfekt auf die leicht melancholische Musik abgestimmt – zur Schau stellt. So handelt das Video primär vom Abschiednehmen: von Erinnerungsbildern, von ungetrübter Materialqualität, schließlich von »alten« Medien insgesamt und deren Repräsentation der Welt.

Irritation and layovers are the main technical aspects within »Aus«. Scratches and the graininess of the found footage (Super 8 film) are heavily exposed and emphasised. This can be seen within some kind of plastic ’extensibility’ or ’liquefaction’ of old movies by means of computers. The images are rhythmized along with the music moving forward and backward in single frames like being “scratched”.
It is important that one can see the framing and the projection itself; the possible manipulation und fragility of the chosen movies are central, fitting perfectly to the slightly melancholic music.
